Democratic Party

Democratic Party or commonly abbreviated as PD is a political party in Indonesia. This party was founded on September 9 2001 and legalized on August 27 2003. The Democratic Party is designed as a centrist party, a nationalist-religious party that views the diversity of the nation's identity as a strength of democracy.[6]

This party was formed by intellectuals and academics. The establishment of the Democratic Party is closely related to saving Indonesia from the impact of the 1998 economic crisis, and succeeding the reform agenda. Therefore, the Democratic Party intends to support Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) as the President of the Republic of Indonesia in the 2004 Presidential Election.[7]

SBY himself was actively involved in conceptualizing, initiating, and designing the party's platform and logo. The success of the Democratic Party in gaining voter trust in the elections has been greatly influenced by the SBY effect. Because of this, the Democratic Party is strongly associated with the figure of Yudhoyono.[7]

Party Ideology

The Political Party Law of 2008 states that political parties are allowed to include certain characteristics that reflect their political aspirations, as long as they do not contradict Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.[38] According to Articles 2 and 3 of the Articles of Association and House Rules (AD/ART), the Democratic Party is based on Pancasila and adheres to the ideology of “religious-nationalism.” They view attempts to oppose Indonesian nationalism and religion as incorrect and misleading actions.[39] Expert opinions on the party's political orientation vary. Academics and domestic observers classify it as a nationalist party,[40] while international political experts classify it as a nationalist-secular[3][41] or nationalist-liberal party.[42] Its political tendency is described as centrist[41][43] or moderate-right.[44]
