Partai Gerindra

The Indonesian Movement Party (abbreviated as Gerindra) is a political party in Indonesia that is ideologically right-wing populist and nationalist. Founded in 2008, Gerindra serves as the political vehicle for the former ABRI general, as well as the current President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. Currently, Gerindra is the third largest party in the DPR based on the vote tally in the 2024 legislative elections with 86 seats. The Indonesian Movement Party also participates in the regional elections in Indonesia. Gerindra is one of the relatively new parties (established in 2008) that currently dominates the government and presidential seat after the Democratic Party.

In the period from 2008 to 2019, Gerindra positioned itself as an opposition party. After the 2019 elections, Gerindra joined the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet led by President Joko Widodo, although Prabowo previously faced Joko Widodo in the presidential elections in 2014 and 2019. Source: Wikipedia

Party Ideology

The Political Party Law of 2008 states that political parties are allowed to include certain characteristics that reflect their political aspirations, as long as they do not contradict Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. According to articles 5 and 7 of the Charter of Gerindra, Gerindra is based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, while its identity is rooted in nationalism, populism, religion, and social justice. In February 2019, party central board member Andre Rosiade described Gerindra as a "national-religious" party. Outsiders' views on the political orientation of the party vary. Academics and domestic observers classify Gerindra as a nationalist party, while international observers categorize it as a secular party with a hard nationalist stance or as a "militant nationalist" party. Tom Power disagrees with labeling Gerindra as a secular party and categorizes it as an "inclusivist-nationalist" party, due to its willingness to compromise with the agenda of Islamic politics. Its political tendencies are described as right-wing or right-wing populist. Source: Wikipedia
