Partai PDIP

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is a political party in Indonesia positioned center-left. Since 2014, this party has been the ruling and largest party in the People's Representative Council (DPR) with 128 seats. This party is currently led by Megawati Soekarnoputri, who served as the President of Indonesia from 2001 to 2004. This party is part of the former President of Indonesia's 7th term Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

The origins of PDI-P can be traced back to the times when Megawati was forced out from the leadership of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) by the New Order government under the leadership of Soeharto in 1996. After Soeharto's resignation and the lifting of restrictions on political parties, Megawati established this party. PDI-P won the majority of votes in the 1999 legislative elections, and Megawati became president in July 2001, succeeding Abdurrahman Wahid. After her term ended, PDI-P became the opposition during the administration of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. PDI-P regained power after the 2014 legislative elections.

PDI-P is a member of the Asian Liberal and Democratic Council and the Progressive Alliance.

Party Ideology

The Political Parties Law of 2008 states that political parties are allowed to include certain characteristics that reflect their political aspirations, as long as they do not contradict Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.[42] According to Article 5 Paragraph 1 of the Statutes and Bylaws (AD/ART), PDI-P adheres to Pancasila. Megawati specifically clarified that the Pancasila in question is the version from June 1, 1945.[5] In September 2023, the party's Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto stated that PDI-P is a "left" party that is progressive, not a communist or socialist party.[13] External views on the party's political orientation vary. Domestic academics and observers classify PDI-P as a nationalist[11] and secular party,[14][43] but international academics see PDI-P as a nationalist-secular,[8][9][44][45] liberal-social[7] or populist party.[9][12][46] Furthermore, within PDI-P, there is a faction of followers of Marhaenism, which is a socialist understanding from Soekarno.[15]
