Partai PKS
Justice and Prosperity Party (PKS) is a political party in Indonesia that is based on Islam.[2][3][5][6][7][13][14] This party originated from the opposition of several Islamic figures against the policies of the 2nd President of Indonesia, Suharto, which required each mass organization to make Pancasila their sole principle.[15][16] From this opposition arose the Tarbiyah Movement. This Tarbiyah Movement then established campus da'wah institutions, which later became the origin of the formation of the Justice Party on July 20, 1998, after the fall of Suharto's government.[2] The Justice Party then transformed into the Justice and Prosperity Party on April 20, 2002, due to its failure to meet the parliamentary threshold of 2%.[15][16]
PKS became part of the coalition of SBY's government during the periods of 2004-2009 and 2009-2014, and held several ministerial seats. PKS's stance of not leaving the SBY coalition despite often differing opinions and criticizing the SBY government, has led some to view PKS as an opportunistic party that exploits situations.[17][18] In the 2019 legislative election, PKS finished in 7th place with a vote share of 8.21% and obtained 50 seats.[19] PKS became the opposition during the administration of Joko Widodo.
In handling the Covid-19 pandemic, in order to alleviate the economic difficulties of the community, PKS encouraged its male cadres who were able to practice polygamy prioritizing widows; however, this recommendation was later revoked after causing controversy in the community.[20][21] Although supporting Joko Widodo's stance against the return of members of the terrorist organization, ISIS, to Indonesia,[22] PKS requested that the children of ISIS members be repatriated so they can be nurtured in Indonesia.[23]
