Place and date of birth: Sorkam, Central Tapanuli, May 27, 1953.
Yasonna Laoly comes from a mixed ethnic background of Nias and Batak. His father, Faogö’aro Laoly, was a police officer from Nias Island who once traded cooking oil from Medan to Nias due to the low police salary at that time. Before pursuing a law education, Yasonna had intended to become a pastor. He is very proud of his cultural heritage, even having worn traditional Nias war attire in the parade commemorating Indonesia's Independence Day. His appointment as a minister was enthusiastically welcomed by the people of Nias because he is the first figure from that ethnic group to serve in the cabinet. Source: wikipedia
